College of Applied and Industrial Sciences

The College includes a number of departments in basic and applied sciences. The College offers a five-year academic program leading to the degree of B.Sc. (Honours) and MSc and PhD Degrees in the following specializations: mathematics; statistics; chemistry; industrial chemistry; biochemistry; biology; microbiology; biotechnology; physics; electronics and instrumentations; meteorology; wood technology; Textile technology; leather technology; food technology and materials technology. The college also offers, in collaboration with the Centre for Human Resource Development, a three-year technical diploma of Laboratory Technology in the following fields: Biology; Biochemistry and Chemistry.
Background

In the world of the increasing technological complexity, the knowledge of basic and applied science is a gateway to the pursuit of many fields, though necessary and essential, the availability of capital by itself is not sufficient enough to automatically enhance socio-economic development; which may require modifications and improvements in the traditional production factors and processes, the transfer of such technology or its modification to suit the needs and requirements of a particular community or area is a rather complex process, which requires grafting of imported technology into the indigenous base. This can only be accomplished if adequate indigenous competence and affective institutionalized mechanism is established. The College of Applied and Industrial Sciences was established to fill the gap of advancing technology particularly in areas lagging behind and promote the role of science as the basic tool for development, Emphasis is evenly spread over basic and applied sciences, and extended to areas of industrial production applied at small as well as larger scales. Our target is the self-employed professional scientist, the industrial and applied science researcher, this is because self-employment in form of small industries is the first step towards an industrialized private sector. The College of Applied and Industrial Sciences (CAIS) was established in 1996 as a leading college, University of Juba. After the separation of South Sudan, the college continues at University of Bahri. The college provides the students with a wide range of educational opportunities, by which they may impart technical knowledge and skills, achieve competence in the various disciplines, promote lifelong learning and contribute to the economy and the welfare of human kind.

The objectives

The College offers the students opportunity to discover and fulfill their potential, and provides access to a first class education in science for people of diverse age, ethnicity, and academic preparation.

-To enhance the economic well being of the Sudan at large particular through effective utilization of resources and promote production by adapting proper technical skills.

-To familiarize students on contemporary issues including the fast pace of technological change, the nature of modern sciences and associated industries.

-To prepare students for successful careers in industrial and applied sciences both in the private and public sectors, and to provide for personal
development and professional competence.

-To encourage professional self employment technologist as a boost to industrialization by spreading small industries.

-Provide adequate practical training in laboratory and computer operation to make graduates immediately employable locally and internationally.

-Provide a sufficient exposure to proper environment to gain experience for professional growth, to be conscious of the protection of environment and to contribute and participate to the development efforts of the country.

-Producing competitive, job-ready and skill-intensive human resource.

-Gaining popularity and public trust, enrolment shows a steady upward trend.
Acquire vital foundation for the students’ development into quality industrial technologists who are endowed with good values and moral qualities as well as the essential skills, knowledge and desirable work ethics.
