The college of Natural Resources and Environmental Studies was started with only five specializations in the year 1977, with a major objective directed towards the preparation of qualified cadres through teaching and research for sustainable management of Southern Sudan Natural resources and similar regions in the country.
In May 1983 a proposal to establish a Geology Unit was submitted to the College Board Meeting No 83/2. Fortunately enough the proposal was passed and later ratified by the Senate.
The unit was created under the name of Department of Earth sciences and started offering the academic program in 1984. The Department started business against the background of growing national and international concern and need to develop geological and related sciences and also towards improving the economic status of the country.
In the year 1994, the restructuring and curricula development of the college had called for the change of the unit to Geology and Mining Department that continues to date.
In 2000 a proposal was put together to establish seven schools within the college among them was School of Geology and Mining. Although the University Council passed the proposal yet the lack of finance hindered the establishment of the schools. Yet another proposal to create a separate college for Geological Sciences was fruitless.
